Open Source Brewing

A friend of mine (major techno-junkie) introduced me to the idea of open source years ago when he wanted me to learn about the various types of operating systems I could get for my computer. He even went so far as to tell me about this group of people that designed a beer to be open source, though where they were and how they went about their process he didn't say. That was almost a decade ago, and I lost track of the concept and never heard anything more about it.

Then I ran across this: http://www.craftbeer.com/pages/stories/ ... ce-brewing

I kinda like where it's going, but I'm not sure how well it will work in the marketplace. What do you all think of open source commercial brewing? Do you think it's a good idea? A bad idea?

I'm curious more than anything because I still don't know much about the market or the entire craft brew/home brew culture (even though I've had MAYBE 10 non-craft beers in my life).
