Shipping cold beer

Thu Nov 03, 2011 7:29 am

I keep my beer in kegs in my kegerator. I then counter-pressure fill bottles when necessary. In most cases the bottles don't last very long.

The issue I'm having right now is that I want to ship a few bottles out to a buddy of mine. The beer is currently cold and I'm concerned that it'll warm in shipment and either skunk or bottle bomb.

Any thoughts on advice on how I can keep this from happening but get my brew to my friend?

Thanks
~B.D.

Warming will not skunk your beer. Skunking comes from being lightstruck. Go ahead and bottle them, let them warm before your package just to make sure everything is ok.

Thanks spiderwrangler. I don't think skunk was the correct word. Would bringing cold beer up to room temperature then chilling it back down have any adverse effects on the brew?

Thank

There was a "study" done by BYO about a year ago where they stored the beer in different ways. One of them was to keep it cold for awhile, then take it out and let it sit at room temp, and then it was repeated a few times for like 6 months I think. The general consensus was that it was not the best idea, but it was not fatal to the beer either.
Also, people are- and have been for a long time- shipping their beers all the time for comps, and they seem to be doing just fine.

Shiny! Thanks Guys!

I'll bottle these up and ship them out.

Thanks again
