I have recently acquired a black ceramic bottle of 2008 x series old crusty. I've never tried this one before, and was wondering how rare this bottle was? also, there are more from where I got it, should I invest in more? last but not least, should I sit on this bottle any longer? or drink it? just curious what you guys think and would do.

We have a couple of shops that have been pushing this one (with a couple of the other imperials in the same black bottles). Now for them to be pushing a California beer in Montana... and the fact that we have a lot of them... I'm going to have to guess that they're pretty common. The only beers that we have in abundance here tend to be made in Montana or New Belgium. I have a couple bottles I've been sitting on, but I haven't tried it yet. The IIPA in the series is not very good at all - all malt so it's thick, sweet & very unbalanced. The ImpRed is similar, but much more drinkable. The ImpStout was the best, but mostly because the faults in the other ones that are still present go along with the style much better. But they're still there. Unless the Crusty is amazing, I'm not buying anything else out of the series.

I just cracked it open the other day, and It was similar to Old Guardian '10 to me, but mellowed out, rounder, and hops have dropped a bit. Good beer, finishes smoother and dryer than OG. I think this is due to the age.

I doubt i will buy more, its a mammoth of a beer...so glad for the swing top.

One the name, you didn't put the brewery or the full name. I know dumb...

Two, the guy who said California for the state that the brewery resides. It Oregon not California

Also I have had 2009 2010 of all of the xs series. I would guess that the beers finished a bit drier every year and in this area, those beers are quite rare.

Last time I had the pleasure of doing a vertical run of Old Crustacean, the 10 year old sample was far and away the best of the lot, and it could have used a little more time even from there. So you have a very young sample, buy all you can and cellar it away until about 2020!

Hey thanks for the info., I'd say if you got to do the vertical on it, you'd probably know.

I bought 2 bottles, opened one up for the B-Day, and going to cellar the rest, as I may buy another bottle or two.
