Raise a pint BNers. One of the high sages of beer lies in grave condition in a Portland hospital and isn't expected to make it through the night. If you know anything about the Portland beer scene you know what an icon he is.

Cheers Don,

Dukester

Any idea what he's in for?

I'd say if you know anything about the American beer scene...

This pint's for Don wherever he is. I can't say I knew him well (never lived closer than 20 hours from Portland) but I have had the opportunity at various beer events to talk with him and he was always more than generous with his time and you never got the feeling that he was just trying to be nice. Last time I saw Don was at the Falling Rock the night before GABF last year. We talked about the 3-tier system, nano-brewing, sour beer and alcohol legislation. Hell of a guy.

This is Don:

"Legendary Portland publican Don Younger, whose Horse Brass Pub is one of the most famous in the world, is near death at 68 from multiple health problems triggered by slipping and breaking a shoulder last week. He's unconcious and on a respirator in the cardiac intensive care unit at a local hospital tonight and not expected to survive long, and dozens of friends, aquaintances, brewers, publicans and pubsters and members of Oregon's beer industry are gathering at the Horse Brass tonight to tell stories and drink pints of Younger's Special Bitter and shots of McCallan's Scotch as a proper vigil for Don."

yeah, Twitter has been buzzing about his passing all day today.

I can't say I had any clue who he was, but I'll be raising a few in his honor tonight

Sadly, Don lost the fight. He passed away last night around midnight. He will truly be missed in the PNW beer scene and in the much larger community I'm sure.
