Off flavor tasting kit

Wed Nov 03, 2010 5:00 pm

Why is it that the beer flavor tasting kits (that you can use to learn about off flavors with) are so dang expensive?!

$150 for a kit that 6 people can use a single time?
I can buy 30 gallons of beer ingredients for that!

Beertown.org is selling them for 150, only if you're an AHA member. That seem an outrageous price for something so limited in use. I don't have a club nearby, and honestly even if I did I wouldn't want my club dues going to that.

Because they are labor intensive to prepare.

BJCP members can purchase a kit that makes 20 samples worth of 24 off flavors for $50. This is heavily subsidized. The BJCP study guide has recommendations for dosing amounts for the dozen or so off flavors that can be simulated with grocery store or lhbs purchased ingredients (lactic and acetic acid, diacetyl, etc).

Do you know where? The guys in my class buy it directly from siebel for about $150. I think next year we would prefer to do the $50 option.

I seem to create new additions for my off flavor tasting kit about every 4th or 5th batch. Very economical too.

I am not aware of a permanent link for ordering, but it happens to be in the first listed news item on the main BJCP page right now.

Info on the kits and instructions for getting a free one in conjunction with an exam prep class are in the CEP section, but no link to purchasing one there.

If you want to do it 'on the cheap', a little google searching will uncover what is in each of the off-flavor 'spikes'.

Take a look at this list as one such example:

If you are a BJCP member (ie, a judge), you can use this link http://www.bjcp.org/apps/kits/index.php , login using your BJCP id, and it will take you to the ordering page. I just tried it and it works. Cost is $50 but only payable by paypal.
