I lived in Pittsburgh for two years in college and didn't drink one decent beer the whole time. Iron City is to be experienced exactly once in your life. After that, you are on your own.

As for non-beer stuff, stop by "The O" (Original), a hot dog and french fry place between Pitt and CMU. It is a greasy dive with a great vibe.

The Church Brew works is a great place to go, if for nothing else, just for the atmospere. I was able to visit for dinner and a few beers on my last trip out there. (I liked all the beers I had, but my palate is not defined enough to offer any real comments) There is something about sitting in old church pews, with a waiter that looks very much like paul mcCartney scurrying out of the former confession box (now the entrance to the kitchen) with some good food and beers. The Pittsburgh Brewing company (Iron City) is actually a block down across the street from The Church. There are a few other local breweries in town, but i have never vsited or had their beer.

Primanti Brothers in The Strip District is also a good local flavor (sorta like Geno's cheesesteaks in Philly)

If you are into weird stuff, the Andy Warhol museaum is in Pittsburgh, last time I was there it was a cheap admission and the "silver cloud room" is very cool.
There are also 2 homebrew clubs in the area one is http://trashhomebrewers.org/ and the other http://www.trubrewers.com/ I think their sites may provide some good info on places to go.
Enjoy your visit, its a nice little city, I plan on moving back there in October!

Travis,

Fat Heads in the Southside ( https://www.fatheads.com/ ) for a kickass bar and mix/match six packs. I'd say probably your best bet for bar/six pack experience.

D's Six Pax and Dogz ( http://www.regentsquare.net/ds6pax.html ) if you want the best mix/match six packs (900 or so beers).

The Sharp Edge ( http://sharpedgebeer.com/html/full.htm ) is another bar. Think they have 50 beers on tap or some such thing...mostly Belgians.

As a disclaimer, I have never been to any of these places since I don't like bars (plus they are a bit of a drive for me), but I have heard their names passed around enough to know they are decent.

And on an unrelated note, this Weyerbacher Prophecy is pretty interesting. Tastes like I'm chewing on an oak tree...in the good way.

Lufah,

Don't know if you've made your trip yet but my local michigan brewpub just opened a resturant by the pittsburg airport. It's called Hereford and Hops. There beers from our local pub one a gold and a bronze at the 2006 world beer cup. One for their blond ale and one for their oatmeal stout. Check it out if you get a chance.

Just as a note, Hereford and Hops isn't really that close to the Pittsburgh International Airport, as it is in Cranberry Township, PA, which isn't even in the same county. That said, they are probably only between 25 and 30 miles apart, probably taking 40 to 45 minutes to get from one to the other.

It takes me about 20 minutes to get there (I'm about 15 miles away), and I pass it every day going to/from work. I've never been there yet either, but I want to stop there sometime or another.
