The 2006 Pannepot is sooooooo good. Definitely worth the 5 -6 dollar a bottle price tag.

I'm in the midst of a somewhat anti-belgian phase too, except that I still return to some of the staples (de dolle, orval, rochefort). I'm much less experimental with belgians than I used to be; I'm more likely to try out a new american beer. I've never had too much of a problem with getting too many stale belgians in NJ (unlike germans, which always taste like dog ass from the bottle for some reason).

It's funny that you mention this becuase I've been offered a Monkship at one of the Trappist monasteries...but I just don't like Belgian beers!

The trappist/abbey Begians are probably my least favorite family of Belgian ales, if you also consider farmhouse ales and sour ales as separate families.

But then there are a few trappist beers that just knock my socks off, Orval and Wesmalle trippel are good examples. I had my first Westvleteren beers recently. I hope they were just in bad condition becasue I thought they were forgettable at best. They tasted pretty oxidized and the 8 was sour too, so I still want to try these beers fresh in Belgium (or at least well cellared).

They were definitely in bad condition, becuase if you had a Westy 12 in good condition, it's one of the most amazing beers on the planet, IMO. Quads...Fuck Yeah!!!

I love Belgian beers. I don't drink them every day, or even every week for that matter. But I'm pretty open with what beers I like to drink. So I don't overdue myself with 1 style. I don't have a go to beer, I just drink what I'm in the mood for and I think it helps me not get sick of a style.

I can back this. I don't get this either, but am I offered one I won't turn it down ... it is beer never the less! I do have a theory though why these beers is such a hit - they are everything that International/American mainstream megaswill largers are not and that's why so many ppl love them (Except for that fizzy thing).
