Hmm, oddly enough I did look at your main website shortly after I posted before and saw all of your beer tools. I did happen to miss the link for Beer XML somehow though, hehe.

I suppose it might be dumb to continue work on the thing I just started, seeing as you have provided some very usable tools.

I guess I'll see what Code wants to do and what not. In the meantime I'll just tinker around writing some code, since I'm out of practice anyways. So even if it goes nowhere, at least it got me into the programming groove again a little bit.

Thanks for the link to your page, and I await the arrival of Beer XML.

There are probably tons of capable folks here including yourself, so don't just hang on what I want to do or not do... This isn't my project; I'd just like to help out if I can.

I think it'd be awesome, but there are some things that need to be thought out, like:

If your goal is to approach Justin about hosting this, then his direction is crucial - he may not want to alienate ProMash or BeerSmith. If you're gonna host it elsewhere then this isn't a concern.

Debate needs to happen about what to expect from the tool - is there something bigger / better / nicer than what the existing tools offer? Is there something that all other tools do in a boneheaded way?

I know the urge is to just write some code, but is there a plan?

I suggest hammering out a feature set and some flow first....

It was a disguised gay ping and I'm pleased to say you were the first to respond. You win! Justin and/or J.P. will be in touch soon.

I would just like to say I have no interest at all in helping with this.

Thanks

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.

Sorry about that. It wasn't fair of me to just say, "I'll see what Code says." I guess because you are the only person who mentioned maybe working on it, I kind of viewed it as perhaps ending up as a Trans and Code production. I shouldn't have jumped to that conclusion.

And yes, there are other things I didn't think through...

I guess the latest thing is, I have no intention of stepping on bperetto's toes here. Granted, I wouldn't have anything ready for months if I proceeded, but I still feel dumb "competing" here, when I know his stuff is pretty decent.

I think the main thing I wanted out of my idea was to make something that is cross-platform, but doesn't rely on Java or Flash. Basically to try to make a site that is functional and stylish that basically encompasses most/all/more(?) functionality than BeerSmith and ProMash. That way, people in any OS that has a Javascript capable browser can utilize the project. I tend to use a lot of fringe operating systems (like Haiku/BeOS/Zeta and SkyOS), so I don't get nice things like Flash and Java in those operating systems.

Yes, my dodrantal surgation. Seriously though...

Honestly, I think ProMash and BeerSmith are great. They just feel really dated to me. That is really my only complaint. I don't think they do anything "boneheaded," since they both function fine.

If I am to go through with this, I'm not sure what'd happen with the hosting. I'd probably host it myself unless TBN took interest in it. If so, I'd gladly let them host it to extend their site.

Honestly I don't have a huge plan. Making flowcharts and writing proposals and that have never really been something I've liked doing, but I admit they make sense...especially if you plan on having anybody else jump on board. I'm sure me saying, "well, we're just going to wing it" doesn't really motivate anybody to join in on the thing.

As such, I'll try to work on writing some kind of strategy down, to at least gauge the feasibility of the vision in my head.

Alright, I typed up my ideas for it. It is pretty much says, "I want it to be an online BeerSmith," but with a lot more words. Some sections don't really describe things well, but that is due to my poor understanding (as of now) of some things (like decoction).
