Sanitizer differences

My wife over heard me say that I wanted to pick up some Star-San and she grabbed a bottle of the IO Star-San to surprise me. Is it as effective and are there any disadvantages to using one ore the other?

IO-STAR is a low foaming iodophor sanitizer. Not a fan. My favorite is STAR SAN.

The IO-Star works fine as a sanitizer, most people prefer the Star San as when it is mixed in proper proportions you do not have to rinse. You must rinse all items santized with IO-Star or it will affect the flavor of the product.

That said, it's your responsibility to use the entire thing and be extra grateful that she took the time to care. Otherwise, your hobby will be in jeopardy.

I'd say if you didn't open it, see if the homebrew shop will swap it for you...will she really notice the bottle. If she's like my wife, she rarely goes near my brew stuff anyways. But have a trinket for her handy to distract her in case she calls you on it :D

Nah. I'd use it. I've used both acid and iodines from that company, and they both work well. I rinse the iodine before anything touches it... maybe that's just me.

It's a good opportunity to show her that her effort means a lot to you.

Used at the 25 ppm concentration (1 ounce/5 gallons) I don't think IO Star requires a rinse. The tech sheet on the Five Star site bounces back and forth between recommending a rinse and not depending on the application.

I mostly use Star San but swap in IO Star periodically to ward against developing a house bug resistant to Star San. I never rinse and never have any problems with off flavors in the beer.
