Wed Mar 21, 2012 4:04 pm

Need to profile something for a paper, so doing homebrewing, thus saving me the need of doing work :D.

Anyway, if ya would kindly answer these questions:

1)What drew you to home brewing

2)What preconceptions did you have before brewing your first batch

3)What inspires your brewing

4)What do the people around you think of the hobby

5)How do you relate your home brewing to craft beer

f)Anything else you'd like to say about home brewing.

Anyway, thanks in advance.

1) I started doing it when I was underage out of neccessity. I also have 2 homebrewing uncles.
2) My dad got a beer kit for christmas when I was a kid. It was one of those really cheap prehopped extract kits and it turned out pretty bad from what my dad said. I had tasted other homebrew before that had a distinct extracty/homemade taste and was often comtaminated so I thought that's what I was going to make but it was ok because as long as it had alcohol and tasted ok it would serve it's purpose. Well it turned out I was dead wrong. I made an awesome batch of raspberry amber ale from midwest and put the raspberry flavoring in half the batch. It was amazing. It was an epiphany. I realized I could make GOOD beer at home.
3) I draw inspiration from good commercial beers that I drink. I'm not out to make a double imperial chocolate coffee cinnamon peanut butter stout. My latest project has been perfecting German style lagers and trying to replicate commercial examples like Paulaner and Spaten. Before that I worked on IPAs.
4) Everyone loves my beer, some more than others. I have changed the mind of many skeptics. I love watching the change in facial expression from a skeptical "I hope this doesn't kill me" to "Oh my god that's freakin' GOOD you MADE that at HOME???"
5) Homebrewing is very closely related to craft brewing in that many homebrewers are craft drinkers and many craft brewers started as homebrewers. Homebrewers sometimes use craft beer as a benchmark for their beers, strive to replicate them, or make comparisons to them as most homebrewers have drank the same craft brews.
-"You want a beer?"
-"But it's 7am"
-"Scotch?"

1)What drew you to home brewing?
Not really sure. I did my first one in 96. A friend had an empty carboy and I was fascinated by it. He made wine. I didn’t care for wine at that point so I asked if I could borrow it and I made a Cooper’s Australian Stout.
2)What preconceptions did you have before brewing your first batch?
None, really. I was unaware that people were doing it until I went to the hobby shop.
3)What inspires your brewing
I love to do things myself and I like to see people’s reactions when I put it in front of them. The same thing got me to go to culinary school. I love being able to provide something that I made and get feedback from it. I also like the fact that it brings people together. Something as simple as taking time to appreciate a good beer and discussing it with someone whose company I enjoy is awesome.
Another thing that inspires me is the simple fact of having what I want, when I want it. Being in west central Minnesota, many beers are unavailable to me. Not just different brands, but styles, alltogether. If I want to drink it, I have to make it.
4)What do the people around you think of the hobby
They think I’m some sort of mad scientist or something. Most responses are” Do you make dark beer”?
I tell them that everything compared to Bud light or Coors is dark by comparison. I also let them know that I make many different styles and I can probably provide one that they would like.
They like the idea and many show interest in doing it, too. Most fall by the wayside, though.
5)How do you relate your home brewing to craft beer
I try to get people to drink my homebrew in order to have them try other beer, to broaden their horizons, if you will. I think by making people more aware of it, they are more likely to go try something new. I try and turn as many people onto craft beer as I can. I try not to talk to them like they are drinking shit, but it is hard to do.
f)Anything else you'd like to say about home brewing.
I have to say that it is the greatest group of people I have ever had the pleasure to be around. Perhaps it is the beer, but I think it is more. The sense of camaraderie is astounding. Take the BN Army for example (perish the thought, I know!) :unicornrainbow: .Here, we have damn near 10000 people, most of whom have never met, sharing info, jokes, and even sympathy and support in time of need or trouble.
I have seen support offered for someone’s house being destroyed by floods, tornados or fire. Support for people that have had to put down pets. Support for people going through divorces, deaths, and even incarceration.
It never ceases to amaze me that the main reason we came to be here is to make and drink better beer, but we end up creating friendships and networks that would have never been possible otherwise.
Who’d a thunk it?

Cheers!

1)What drew you to home brewing
I was dating a girl, she was into beer (I was too) and had plans to be a brewer, running a brewpub. Her family all had pitched in on a brew kit, so the saturday morning brew days at their house were what really drew me in. Everyone working together to make beer, having fun. We don't date anymore, because I'm an asshole, but that fun, crossed with my love for beer in general, led to me buying my own kit and nowadays I'm a Mufasa-approved all grain home brewer.

2)What preconceptions did you have before brewing your first batch
First, that brewing was pretty easy. Charlie Papazian has that effect when you read his book. And I guess if you're steeping grains, it is. Now that I've moved up to my cooler system, this is very wrong, my brew days are 7 hours long or so. Also, I thought we'd be able to just make whatever beer we wanted with little to no effort.

3)What inspires your brewing
The BN! I don't think I would have hung in there through 6 or 7 mediocre/downright bad batches if I hadn't had the community here telling me to keep going, or had the brewcasters in my headphones speaking words of encouragement and advice. I'm not involved in any local club (no time, really, due to all the learning I have to do) so having a community patting me on the back and talking shit about the beer I screw up is a great thing to have. I've made a good chunk of friends through the BN, and make more every day, and it's not a community I could ever see myself leaving.

4)What do the people around you think of the hobby
They like the free beer, mostly. I have a few friends who like to come over and brew, they aren't as nutty about it as I am. I'm sort of that guy, though, I always show up with a six-pack and am therefore always welcome. People who really know me well are glad I found a hobby that keeps me out of trouble.

5)How do you relate your home brewing to craft beer
I kind of don't, really. To me, those are two very separate realms, and while there is interaction between them, and they are mutually beneficial to each other, my home brew and craft beer rarely cross paths. Of course, I don't go to a lot of events or anything either (there really aren't a ton here anyways).

1)What drew you to home brewing?
Had friends that did some homebrewing, offered to do a couple batches as a group, so my wife and I went to their place and brewed our first beer (Charlie P's Palalia IPA).

2)What preconceptions did you have before brewing your first batch?
Didn't really have many preconceptions... probably thought it was more difficult than it is.

3)What inspires your brewing?
I now work part time at the LHBS, where I've been doing all the brewing supply ordering. My inspiration comes from new or unusual ingredients, talking with homebrewing customers, craft and homebrewed beer I've tried from others, fellow BNers, etc.

4)What do the people around you think of the hobby?
Everyone I know that I've talked about homebrewing with either has done it or wants to try it. Very positive about homebrewing in general.

5)How do you relate your home brewing to craft beer?
Homebrewing is what got me into craft beer, so it's an integral part for me. Before starting homebrewing, I was generally drinking better beers, some of which were craft, but not the range I now enjoy. Before homebrewing I drank a lot of Smithwicks and Amber Bock...

FUCK YEAH!

Anyway, thanks in advance.[/quote]

1)What drew you to home brewing - My friend received a brew kit as a Christmas gift - addicted ever since!

2)What preconceptions did you have before brewing your first batch - Would be better than it was - it sucked, but I know I could do better. A little research and it turns our kits suck! :)

3)What inspires your brewing - Commercial Microbrew examples and need to replicate - have my beer friends say; "Damn, that is good, maybe better than 'x' brewery"

4)What do the people around you think of the hobby - Strange, but go at it! We all love beer

5)How do you relate your home brewing to craft beer - Not as good, as that is my goal. I always say, when it begins to taste like theirs, I am done!

6)Anything else you'd like to say about home brewing. - Awesome, but can be expensive, addiction, I mean Hobby.

1)What drew you to home brewing
My cousin, SGTSatan, started brewing, and I got interested, so I started brewing.

2)What preconceptions did you have before brewing your first batch
Probably that it was complicated. Especially all grain brewing, which at first sounded like magic.

3)What inspires your brewing
Some of the nutty ideas in this forum. There are some great brewers here: Bugeater, Tasty, Mylo leap to mind, and when they post a recipe, I pay attention. And I get a lot of inspiration from Can You Brew It?

4)What do the people around you think of the hobby
They think I'm harmlessly crazy. But they do like the beer I give them.

5)How do you relate your home brewing to craft beer
Homebrewing lead me to craft beer. Since I couldn't replicate the American lagers i was drinking, I moved on.

f)Anything else you'd like to say about home brewing.
Home brewers are the best! When I go to NHC, I get to reconnect with my BN friends, and the friends I made at my first NHC in Denver in 2007. And this forum is the best beer forum on the Internet.
