Chasing bottled beers in NYC

Wed Jun 27, 2012 8:24 pm

Howdy all,

Have a friend travelling to NYC from Australia in a month or so and have asked them to chase up some beers for me while there.

I'm chasing a good beer/bottle shop close(ish) to;

Hotel Beacon located at 2130 Broadway at 75th Street.

I'm asking this person to chase up some Alaskan Amber primarily as well as anything by Heretic, Russ. River and Firestone they might come across.

What's the chances of picking these up?? Any places people would recommend?

Cheers

Whole Foods market has a great selection of craft beer, many of which are available by the bottle. I've been to the Columbus Circle and TriBeCa stores, and both were similar in terms of selection.

Unfortunately, Alaskan doesn't distribute in NY, so you may be out of luck there. Not sure about Heretic, but I would guess they are still mostly west coast as well.

No russian river in nyc. Closest you can get is in Philly. No heretic either, although you can order by mail in the US via beerjobber.com. have it delivered to the hotel! Well worth it. Firestone Walker is easily found all over nyc. Union Jack is my go-to train commute beer! WHOLE FOODS Columbus Circle has a great selection and they have a beer bar with 10-12 taps with growler service and over 100 bottles on the list. Retail selection of bombers is great and always fresh. There are plenty of other good bottle shops as well, but supermarkets tend to do a pretty good job.

This is likely not the response you desire, but in my experience traveling to the east coast, those beers taste like failed versions of themselves so far from the source (with some exceptions). With that said, there are some great North East breweries, if you are willing to forgo West Coast style hop character. I would suggest looking for some Belgian styles from upstate NY and MA.

Enjoy the trip!

Hey, my wife brought some bottles back to Oz from NYC last year, here's the thread I started seeking advice:

The staff at whole foods were great apparently, and the beer was all in great shape.

As far as heretic goes, believe it or not you can get it in Australia now!
Slowbeer.com.au is carrying evil twin, evil cousin and shallow grave. Depending on where you are, a decent beer shop near you might even have it in stock. It's the same importer that brings green flash beers over here.

I'd be trying to get some Stone beers, and some Dogfish Head, and have a funny around to a which East coast breweries have been on the session.

Good luck!
