Ick. Festering makes me think of a splinter that has been in your hand for so long that it starts filling up with pus, and then it oozes out a mixture of pus and dissolved wood fibers.

McDego, if it makes you feel any better, I was adding 2 pounds of honey to a batch at high krausen one time and the bottle slipped out of my hand and fell in. I not sanitized it either. It did'nt sink much past the foam but I was sweating it big time. Point is, the beer turned out to be very good. There was no infection, the beer was also 10% ABV though.
