Batch Sparge Efficiency

Hmph. In a strange twist on my 3rd Batch Sparge batch (partial
mash)...I was 64% efficiency. No big deal. Just added and extra 1/2 lb+ of LME and still hit the numbers. Just weird since my last 2 mashes were over 70%. Only thing I did different was forgot to add my infusion of 1 gallon on my first half....

Oh well, on a side note I love my stirplate and wish I had learned about yeast starters a lot sooner.

I had the same thing happen on my last two batches. I realized that the grain had come (crushed) from the same place for those batches so I'm pretty sure it was the crush. Added to the list of things I need to buy: Grain mill.

Mills slip sometimes and need to be adjusted, maybe a chunk of something got in the grain bag and found its way into your mill.

Now that I think about it, I may have gotten my last batch from LHBS and this one from NB. On my list is to FIX my grain mill.

Last batch 2-weeks ago, I crushed most of the grain. Batch Sparge and drained 3X...78% efficiency. Final runnings were around 1.015. Looks like 3rd time was a charm for my little 5-gal Igloo.
