Just get yourself a turkey baster and sanitize it. Suck up the sample and squirt it into your hydrometer jar. If you are using a carboy and the baster won't reach, just stick a piece of tubing on the end of it. Just remember to NOT return the sample to the fermenter. Most folks will drink it (or at least take a sip) just to get an idea of how it is doing.

I picked up a really nice baster with a lexan stem at a kitchen boutique shop. This one also came with a nice cleaning brush that is perfect for cleaning the inside of keg posts.

See if your LHBS has a wine thief. That will fit into the neck of a carboy. But it is, to quote Alton Brown, a unitasker. :)
