Everyone is sipping on Chad's new kölsch as the show begins, and we get the latest updates on the lead-up to the opening of Handles Gastropub. Justin is back from his BN on the Road trip, which included stops in Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, and picturesque Forks, but he comes bearing some sad news. We offer our condolences BN style with a disturbing conversation about taxidermy.
Matt Simpson, better known as The Beer Sommelier, joins us on the line from Atlanta, Georgia. He begins by giving us his history in television production and what led to his transition to beer consultation. He goes through several different types of gigs he has had in recent years, from hosting beer tastings for bachelorette parties to presenting at elaborate corporate events. We listen as Matt describes the extensive bottle collection housed in his cellar, which owes its existence in part to Georgia's 6% cap on ABV (which was lifted in 2004).
Since Matt also specializes in beer and food pairings, we have no choice but to get Sean Paxton on the mic to test Matt's skills. After the crew discusses a couple of his recent television appearances on the likes of Fox News and The Today Show, Matt gives his recommendations for which beers Justin should take to Burning Man, before telling us to check out his new app and bidding us farewell.
Some of the beers Justin brought back from the road trip make their way around the studio. We're treated to Adam, Cherry Adam, and Ruth from Hair of the Dog, followed by a remarkable sour from Hopworks Urban Brewery. Our panties drop as we taste the framboise from Steamworks Brewery, and we're equally impressed with their IPA. Letters from the Feedback are read, questions are answered, a new game is played, DOTW calls are rolled. This week's medal goes to Ben Henning.
